Sognando la Primavera - best Spring events in the area

It's still so cold in Umbria today 21st March that it could be even funny the fact that Italy is also known all over the World as "Il Paese del Sole" (=the Country of the Sun)...

Flowers are timidly blooming in these still cold days

Sognare la Primavera (=Spring dreaming) and thinking about the amazing events that will take place in the next months, it is a necessary excercise to help us to face these hard, boring, last cold days of Winter here.

Spring in Umbria is so rich in festivals that it's quite hard to put them all together in a list, so we've just chosen some of them among our favourite events in our area of Todi and Southern Umbria.

Are you planning a trip here? Be sure to not miss:

In Todi and all over the region

In Umbria during Easter time there are traditional liturgic rites, religious events but also food traditions.
Since Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter cakes and breads called Pizza di Pasqua.
Pizza di Pasqua (=Easter cheese-bread) is prepared with flour, Parmesan and pecorino cheese, eggs and lard, consumed during Easter and usually stuffed with capocollo - one of the many cold cuts of Umbria - or used to accompany hard eggs.

From the 28th to the 29th May, the beautiful historical centre of Todi is hosting the third edition of “Todi Fiorita 2011”, national exhibition of Flower Gardening organized by the Association “Verde Todi”, in collaboration with the local City Hall.
The historical places of this beautiful Umbrian Medieval town will be the locations of blooming gardens, scents and essences which will follow the visitors along the different itineries.
In addition - for this special event - many private “Palazzi” will open their doors to the visitors. The halls and gardens of these magnificient places will be adorned by professional gardeners.

In Todi and all over the region

This is the most important wine event of the year and definitely my favourite. Umbrian wine is the main protagonist together with all the fantastic people who produce it and the beautiful territory where it is made. For the past 17 years during the last Sunday of May, the members of the association "Turismo del Vino" have opened their doors to the public establishing in this way an immediate and direct contact with all wine tourists and lovers.
Our town of Todi is famous for the production of Grechetto di Todi, a wine cited by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder, writing in the 1 st century B.C. in his Historia Naturalis , “ peculiaris est tudernis” (=it is typical of Todi)referring to the particular vine which produces a dry white wine with a slightly bitter aftertaste. In 2009 this great white wine got the prestigious recognition "Grechetto di Todi D.O.C." indicating the wine made by Grechetto grapes, produced only in the territory of Todi.

The Corpus Domini (the Latin expression means Body of the Master) is a significant and solemn event in the Christian liturgical calendar. It was instigated on the 8th September 1264 by Pope Urban IV following the miracle of Bolsena. The story of the miracle relates an account of the Bohemian priest, Peter of Prague who, on his way from Prague to Rome in 1263, had been experiencing some doubts about the truth of the transubstantiation. While celebrating mass at the tomb of the Holy Martyr, Cristina, in Bolsena, blood dripped from the consecrated host, bathing the host or corporale and the liturgical linens. Since then, every year in Orvieto, on the Sunday following the feast of the Corpus Domini, the remains of the sacred host from the Miracle of Bolsena, contained in a precious reliquary, is carried in a procession through the streets, following a route that passes through all of the districts and all of the most significant places of the town. The religious procession marches together with an historical parade where all the magistrates, captains, standard-bearers and knights of the communal period are represented, as well as the Coats of Arms and the banners of the noble Orvietan families. The two processions come together in an extremely evocative and unforgettable spectacle.

ITALIA 150 - Happy Birthday old beautiful Lady!

I tried several times in the last weeks to write something original on the celebration that is taking place today 17th March 2011: 150th Anniversary of Unification of our Country, but I wasn't able to do it.
Every word I wrote, it sounded a bit old fashionated or rethorical to me. Maybe because patriotism is quite a new feeling for us Italians.
Shocked by WWII, when important symbols of Italian history like the Roman emblems and the "Tricolore"(our Flag) were used to support a dictatorship, Italians- for more than sixty years- have proudly shown the National Flag only during the football matches.
But this time it seems different. This feeling to be a Nation, 20 regions each one very different from the other, unique, but at the same time unified, is conquering the heart of all of us.
Today we proudly celebrate this very important day, the day when, 150 years ago, our Country became a Nation named ITALIA.

Buon Compleanno bella Signora! Buon Compleanno Italia!

"Know’st thou the land where the lemon-trees bloom,
Where the gold orange glows in the deep thicket’s gloom,
Where a wind ever soft from the blue heaven blows,
And the groves are of laurel and myrtle and rose?"
